Our trial week was a very stressful week for our family. On January 8th, my mom had a hip replacement surgery and was scheduled to be hospitalized for two to three days following the surgery. On the day she was supposed to come home she was transferred to the ICU after she coded. CT scans showed that she had blood clots in both of her lungs. She was sedated and put on a ventilator for three days before she woke up enough to start breathing on her own again. She’s doing good now, but still isn’t at home. She had to go to a rehab facility because of all of the complications during (her femur bone was broken during surgery) and after her surgery. Somehow amongst all of that chaos we were able to get our meal plan and groceries for this week to sample some Keto recipes. Everything that we had was fantastic. We (James and I) will be following the Diet Doctor two week challenge starting this Sunday so we logged on to the site to get recipes and meal plan from there. Technically speaking you aren’t supposed to do a trial week, but because of my diabetes I was advised to do one to see how my body, particularly my blood sugars would respond to the significantly lower carb intake. Thankfully I have a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) that I am able to check my blood sugars frequently throughout the day because monitoring my blood sugars was like being on a rollercoaster, even after cutting my insulin to half of my normal doses. I have a good idea now though as to what I will need to do to keep from having frequent lows like I did this week. I am so grateful that my doctors are so supportive and responsive. I feel like they want me to succeed and they are going above and beyond for me.
I would be lying if I told you that our week was perfect, because it wasn’t. I’d like to blame my carb bingeing on low blood sugars, because that would be partly true, but at the end of the day I should have planned better, and I need to practice some will power. Suffuce it to say our trial week had it’s ups and downs. However, I tend to eat my feelings when I am stressed out or upset so being able to stick to the diet most of the week was a big accomplishment for me. You can’t really cheat on the Keto diet though so I will need to do better when we officially start tomorrow. Otherwise as soon as I get into ketosis, which I am told can take 2-3 days, I will be out of ketosis and have to start again.
So tonight I am going to get bread pudding from Famous Dave’s and I plan to enjoy every minute as a last hoorah.
