Well, week 1 is officially in the books. It has been a long week for all of us.
Keto Update: We made it through our first official week of Keto! It wasn’t a perfect week for either of us, and we aren’t in Ketosis yet according to our keto meters, but we made it through. In order to be in the range for weight loss Ketosis your blood test results should be in the range of .5-3. Both of us were at .2 yesterday when we checked. We were excited and depressed all at the same time. This was the first time we received a reading with a number, every other test we’ve done in the past two weeks has just registered as Low so that was pretty exciting. On the other hand it was a little discouraging because we weren’t in Ketosis yet even though we had done pretty well following the diet and recipes. We are supposed to be eating twenty or less carbs a day and there were days where I think we exceeded that or we just didn’t pay enough attention to our carb intake. I’ve been surprised by the amount of carbs in a lot of things. Speaking of, why are nutrition labels so stinking small? I have to have my glasses on to read most of them and even with my glasses some are so tiny I still couldn’t read them.
Overall If we were grading ourselves on a scale of one to ten, I would give myself a seven, and James would get an eight. Just like last week I was dealing with low blood sugars still. Some of the meals just don’t have enough carbs in them which causes my blood sugars to bottom out. Dealing with low blood sugars is not fun. I have an alarm that is tied to my continuous glucose monitor and an app on my phone sounds an alarm when my blood sugar readings start to dip below 70. Once the alarm sounds I have to quickly eat or drink at least 15 grams of carbs to prevent a serious low from occurring. I am going to have to call my doctor tomorrow morning and get my insulin levels adjusted again. Even though it’s a pain in the ass, it’s a good sign. It does make me wonder why more doctors don’t recommend the Keto diet to their patients with Type II diabetes instead of just treating them with pills.
Covid Update: We have three more days of quarantine as a family, unless we all go get tested, then we will be out of quarantine tomorrow. So the rest of us are going to go get tested tomorrow. Since Kierra is the only who had any symptoms we have to go through Test Iowa to get tested. At least that is what we have been told. While we aren’t looking forward to the test but it will be nice to know if anyone else in the house has it so we can get back to some degree of normality. Kierra is doing well, her taste buds are starting to come back already and she feels a lot better than she did just yesterday.
Mom Update: Mom is doing ok. She had to quarantine for ten days so today she should be able to get out of her room today and explore a little bit. The nursing home/rehab facility are only allowing patients to be in their hallway so she won’t be able to go far, but at least she will be able to get out of her room. Her PT sessions are taxing, but she knows she has to do them to build her strength up and so she can get out of there and stay with us until she is strong enough to go home.
